august
the poem
in august i held you and felt my heart melt in august love rushed in it held me, and i lived enough for an entire eternity and august endures over me with memories from under the sun when your wide smile was my comfort.
the translation
the poem is written in the past tense. i held you. and at the very end, august endures over me.
the warmth is real, and it is remembered.
so the scent is the last day of summer: sun still warm on your arms, the air already smelling of september.
it is made in two halves, separately, then fused.
one half is warmth, like hay left in the sun and a candle just put out.
the other is regret, dry and mineral, like a leaf pressed in a book.
from the first second you cannot tell where one ends.
